PhD student, departments Hematopoiesis and Blood Cell Research
We seek 2 PhD students to be based in Amsterdam, and additional PhD students at the partner laboratories of the EU Marie Curie training network RELEVANCE. This network aims to study the production and function of erythrocytes in health and disease. At Sanquin we study the quality control of erythrocytes through the interaction of erythrocytes with spleen macrophages, and how cultured erythrocytes can be produced for transfusion. In total we will recruit 13 PhD students for positions in the Netherlands, the UK, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. You will perform your PhD studies in a multidisciplinary environment and will be trained to transfer knowledge in basic science, technology, and medicine to the partners in research, industry, and clinics to develop new experimental approaches and technologies to study red blood cells.

The Departments Hematopoiesis and Blood Cell Research are part of the Division Research of Sanquin. Sanquin is responsible for the supply of blood and blood products in The Netherlands. Sanquin Research is a large research institute with several departments studying blood cell development and function, plasma proteins and immunology. (http://www.sanquin.nl/en/research). Sanquin provides a lively, internationally oriented, scientific environment with excellent facilities. The research is strongly multidisciplinary and includes molecular biology, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, high throughput techniques (mass spectrometry, sequencing) and extensive cell culture of both adult and embryonic tissues.
We are looking for:
We invite highly motivated students with a MSc in biology, chemistry, medicine or related studies to apply for this position. A background in molecular or cellular biology is preferred. We are looking for independent, responsible and team-oriented candidates with good communication skills in English. Importantly candidates have to (i) spend 3 years outside the country of your recent residence, (ii) spend 2-4 months in the partner groups, and (iii) follow the ITN timeline attending courses and actively participate in the network activities.

- a 36-hour week;
- 8,33% year-end fee;
- by full-time employment 201 vacation hours;
