Postdoc, Department Hematopoiesis
Cancer Immunotherapy is one of the most promising new treatments of cancer, highlighted as the ‘breakthrough of the year 2013’ by the journal Science. One form of immunotherapy involves the treatment of patients with in vitro expanded T cells that are isolated from their own primary tumors (Tumor-Infiltrating Lymphocytes or TIL). Remarkable success has recently been obtained with such TIL therapy of melanoma. While virtually incurable with conventional therapy, 20% of melanoma patients treated with TILs undergo complete remission for at least 3 years. Despite this success, much room for improvement exists. In this project, we aim to improve TIL expansion protocols to increase anti-tumor response rates in patients. In addition, we aim to broaden the TIL portfolio with other tumors that may form good targets for TILs, i.e. prostate cancer, renal cell carcinoma and non-small cell lung cancer. This will involve in-depth analysis of tumor infiltrates and the optimization of the in vitro expansion of TILs from these tumors. The approval from the medical board for this study has already been obtained.
Where you will work:
The research is embedded in the departments of Hematopoiesis/Immunopathology, two multidisciplinary departments with strong backgrounds in immunology, molecular biology and high throughput techniques. This project is performed in close collaboration with medical and research experts from the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital, and the Laboratory for Cell Therapy (LCT, Sanquin). Sanquin provides a lively, internationally oriented, scientific environment with excellent facilities (flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, mass spectrometry, sequencing).
We are looking for:
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a keen interest in translational biomedical research. The candidate holds a PhD, preferentially in immunology. Strong experimental and intellectual skills are required, as well as experience with primary tissue and cell cultures, multicolor flow cytometry and/or immunohistochemistry. We are looking for an independent, responsible and team-oriented candidate who has good communication skills in spoken and written English.
A job in a unique organization. Nowhere else in the world can you find a company that combines medical, pharmaceutical and scientific research in one innovative concern. We offer you the following employee beneftis:
